Winter Drive-In 2008

On Monday January 28, 2008, Temple University played host to the GPHLAIR Winter Drive-In. We welcomed Richard Reeves and Ajeenah Haynes of the National Student Clearinghouse as our Luncheon Q&A speaker. Richard's presentation has been posted in the Downloads area for members to access (requires login). We've also posted a few pictures from the event in the Photos area. Following up on the successful Summer Drive-In, the turnout for this event was equally strong, so thanks to everyone who came out making the event a success. A special thank you goes to Timothy Walsh, of Temple University, for taking the time to coordinate all of the local arrangements and to Jim Trainer, of Villanova University, for bringing in the Student Clearinghouse. The advisory council has already begun working on the Summer Drive-In so keep an eye out for more information.

Summer Drive-In 2007

Our first official GPHLAIR event was held yesterday on the campus of Philadelphia University. All of the presentations have been posted in the Downloads area for members to access (requires login). We've also posted a few pictures from the event in the Photos area. Overall the members of the advisory council were pleased with the turnout and we've received a lot of positive comments about the event. Thanks to all those who made it out and helped to make our first event a great success. Special thanks to Dr. Jerry Rackoff for taking the time to drive all the way to Philly to be our inaugural luncheon speaker. The advisory council will begin working on the plans for our next event. In the meantime, look for our SIG at NEAIR in New Brunswick NJ!

Putting a Face to the Name - Using Avatars

Avatars are images that the community site uses to put a face to the name. Avatars are limited to 80 x 80 pixels. You can upload your avatar in your profile by clicking on the browse button and locating the file on your computer Be sure to click yes next to Enable Avatar and save your changes and...

voila, now everyone can see your smiling face.

Email Notification for Select Discussions

Do you wish that sometimes you didn't have to receive every reply to a discussion that doesn't concern or interest you? With email subscription, you can do just that. If you've set up your email notifications (see blog post) to alert you to new topics posted in the forum, you'll get a single email notifying you of the new discussion. Do nothing and you won't get another email regarding the topic. However, if a topic is of interest to you and you'd like to read each posting in that thread, you can enable email subscription to that thread. At the top of the discussion you'll see a button that says "Enable Email Subscription" (See below).

Click that and it changes to

You have now subscribed to the thread and you'll be emailed each time a new posting is made in that discussion ONLY. Change your mind? Go back to the discussion and click the disable button and notifications stop.

Setting Up Email Notification for the Forum

Want to know when new topics are posted in the forum? It's easy to set up your forum options to notify you when a new topic or post is posted to a particular forum. Click on the forum tab and then click on the forum you wish to be notified about.

We strongly encourage all members to set the GPHLAIR Private Discussion forum to "When new topics are posted" to ensure that they are notified of new discussions in the community.

From there, click on the options button at the bottom of the page. This will expand the options menu where you can select from the drop down menu an option to send email notifications. The three options available are "Never", "When new topics are posted", and "When new posts are posted". Notifications will be sent to the email you register your account with.

IMPORTANT - Lastly, in your profile, ensure that you have enabled email notifications of forum/thread subscriptions in the email options tab. This option has been preselected for you upon registration, so it should be enabled unless you've disabled it manually.

We strongly encourage all members to set the GPHLAIR Private Discussion forum to "When new topics are posted" to ensure that they are notified of new discussions in the community.

Setting Up Your Profile

You can easily access your profile to set up or manage your profile/account by clicking on your user name in the upper right corner of most pages.

Clicking on your user name will take you to a new menu where you can enter profile information, adjust site settings, change your password and other tasks. Please enter the name of your institution in the Location field of the "About" tab.

When you see another member's user name, click on it to view their public profile.

Launching Community Site

We've just launched the community site after some initial testing. We're going to expand the testing as we invite interested members to join. And while it appears that most things are working fine, please be patient if we hit a few hiccups along the way. We hope that this will ultimately become a useful tool for the membership of GPHLAIR, but it will depend on your interest in utilizing this community site. We encourage you to make http://gphlair.org/community/ your homepage or include it in your group of pages (tabbed browsing).

Using "My Reader" in the GPHLAIR Community

Once you have registered, you can access the "My Reader" function of the site. From here you can add RSS feeds from your favorite websites to your reader in order to aggregate the feeds into one central location. To add a feed, click on the My Reader tab. Under "My Feeds", right click on the My Feeds folder. You'll see a pop-up menu. Select New Feed from the menu.

A new menu pops up and displays a place to enter your new feed URL. You'll find the RSS feeds on many websites, either as a link with the text RSS or with the symbol. Copy the URL (Right click and copy shortcut in IE) and paste it here. Click Add Feed.

You should now see the feed added to My Feeds folder. (If not click the + sign next to the My Feeds folder to expand the contents.) From here click on a specific feed to display the contents of that feed in the Post window. Article excerpts with links to the articles are shown in the far right window.

You can aggregate as many RSS feeds as you like. You can also add sub-folders to organize your feeds if you are aggregating a lot of feeds.
